The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a five bed facility, located adjacent to a five bed Coronary Care Unit. The unit is able to provide a broad range of critical care modalities, including physiological monitoring, artificial ventilation and renal dialysis.

ICU is staffed by a Medical Director (or designated ICU specialist), a resident medical officer, a Nursing Unit Manager and registered nurses, qualified and/or experienced in Critical Care Nursing.

Patients are admitted to the ICU as referrals from the Emergency Department, from other wards, or as booked admissions post-operatively. Referrals also arise from other hospitals in the Richmond District.

In addition the ICU provides the following services:-
  • consultation on critical care issues
  • intravenous nutrition service
  • insertion of central venous catheters
  • education of other staff members
