MRI - Interesting Case 7 |
This 55 year old lady presented with increasing symptoms of left facial droop, diplopia, ataxia, past-pointing and hearing problems over four weeks’ duration. A cerebellar or brainstem lesion was suspect.
MRI shows a well-defined 4x3x2cm enhancing soft tissue mass arising in the upper pons. It compresses the Aqueduct causing dilatation of the lateral and 3rd ventricles. The MRI appearances are consistent with a Brainstem Glioma.

MRI is the investigation of choice for the diagnosis and follow-up of stroke and brain tumours. Unlike CT (where there is considerable bony artefact), MRI is especially useful in assessing brainstem and posterior fossa pathology.
