Air viva/laerdal bag assembly and cleaning

STANDARDS:
* All registered nurses working in ICU/CCU familiar with and competent at assembling laerdel bag and heads, can assemble and dismantle the equipment prior to and after cleaning.
* Safety for patient by the correct assembly of laerdel head and bag.
* Prevention of contamination of laerdel unit during assembly.
* Clean hands by washing.
* Use clean technique and assemble on cleaned bench in respiratory room.
* All assembled units to be checked by 2 registered nurses to prevent error in assembly and promote patient safety.

EQUIPMENT: Laerdel head (spare units are stored in respiratory room after assembly, on return from CSSD)

PROCEDURE:
* Assembly of parts may be viewed (in photography) in respiratory book.
* All air-viva laerdel heads to be sent to CSSD for cleaning after patient transferred from ICU/CCU or extubation.
